Every gentleman should have the opportunity to feel the bespoke quality of tailoring that goes into a made to measure jacket, not to mention the time and dedication. This formal, but timelessly stylish, jacket is the last word in sophisticated highland dress. Cut slightly higher than other jackets, the Prince Charlie is designed to flatter any shape whilst keeping the full length of kilt on display.
How we make it:
Our Prince Charlie jackets and vests are made from top quality Barathea 100% pure new wool cloth, with a single button on the front, two side vents, cuffs with 3 buttons, pocket flaps with 3 buttons, and flat cloth epaulettes.
When to wear it:
The classic Prince Charlie 'Coatee' Jacket and Vest (waistcoat) is the traditional outfit for 'black tie' formal evening wear events such as dinners, balls, or dances. Today, however, it is also widely worn at daytime weddings, by the groom at his ushers as well as by male wedding guests, as well as special events such as graduations.
What to wear it with:
The Prince Charlie is traditionally worn with an 8 yard kilt in any tartan, off-white socks, and ghillie brogues. You should properly wear a Full Dress Sporran with the Prince Charlie (and vice versa). To complete the look wear a black bow tie, though today you can choose another colour of your liking. Most people do not wear a belt with the Prince Charlie, as the buckle can cause the vest (waistcoat) to lie badly, and is mostly hidden in any case.
Your Choices:
The standard Prince Charlie jacket is supplied in 13oz cloth, but if you prefer a warmer jacket you can choose the 15oz cloth for a small surcharge. The choice of lapel is a matter of taste, but if in doubt we recommend the popular satin finish. We suggest Antique Silver buttons as standard, but you can specify Silver Gilt or Bone buttons if you prefer.

Scotweb’s MD, Dr Nicholas J Fiddes, has written a free illustrated e-book, as a gift to help kilt lovers everywhere. In simple non-technical language it covers every aspect of buying a kilt, choosing your tartan, and accessorising an outfit for every occasion.
As a Governor of the Scottish Tartans Authority, and founder of the world’s first company to market kilts on the Internet (yes, Scotweb) no one is better qualified to offer such advice. Impartial and objective, this is a personal work and is not a Scotweb publication.
